The Dark Horses knew it would be tough taking on a 4A school on their home turf on Friday night, and the Clinton varsity gave it their best shot, but Laney High took home the 28-0 win.
Fighting throughout the first quarter, Clinton and Laney would keep each other from the end zone. After a long first quarter, the score would remain 0-0.
Going into the second quarter with new hopes and tactics, the Horses managed to hold the Buccaneers back until the last minute of the first half, when Laney scored a TD and PAT, moving the halftime score to 7-0.
Clinton held the Wilmington team to a safety in the third quarter, for an 9-0 lead, but by the fourth, the 4A Buccaneers had worn the 2A Dark Horses down.
With 11:06 left in the last quarter of the night, Ryan Williams would score another TD for Laney. Minutes later Laney would score yet another touchdown, leaving Clinton behind with a score of 21-0.
Then Buccaneer JaQuan Smith intercepted a Dark Horse pass. Even though he was stopped just a few yards from another touchdown, this shut down any Dark Horse momentum. With 3:06 left, Laney would raise their score one last time, bringing the final score to 28-0.
Leading rusher for Clinton was Silas Herring, with 8 carries for 49 yards; Hyson Howard had 10 carries for 36 yards; and Kenneth Ford had 6 carries for 32 yards.
Quarterback Jonathan Wright attempted 20 passes for six completions of 74 yards and 3 interceptions. Chandler Whitfield caught 2 for 36 yards; Kirs Royal, 1 for 14; and Jacob Smith, 1 for 13 yards.
On Dark Horse defense, Kevin West had 16 tackles, Roy Williams had 10 tackles, Kris Royal had 8 tackles, and T.J. Boone had 8 tackles.
Clinton will face Whiteville next Friday on the Wolf Pack’s home turf.
