Lady Lions fight off Dark Horses for middle school win

September 25, 2013

The Mintz Lady Lions did it again. Despite this being the academy’s first year with a volleyball team, they have defeated another established team. On Tuesday, MCA went to Clinton and took down Sampson Middle in five tough sets: 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 8-15

Some of the highlights from the match included the Lions come-from-behind win in the first set off of Hanna Horne’s seven straight service points. The score was 23-18 with SMS leading when Horne came up to serve.

Courtney Barber had 9 service points, and Madison Hawkins served to win in the 4th set.`

Sydney Norris and Caroline Mathews were clutch on defense, according to MCA head coach Dan Heinz, with middle hitter Erynn Sessoms leading the offensive attack with assists from Savanna Fann and Brianna Wheeler.

“Tonight was about as exciting as a Middle School match can get,” an elated Coach Heinz said. “SMS is very talented, they serve well and play excellent defense.”

“They have a quality program going on. We battled hard, and had to fight from behind most of the night. I was really proud of our effort in the tiebreaker. Our girls were composed and determined, that was a big step for us,” Heinz continued.

Mintz Academy will play Hobbton Middle on Oct. 1.
