The Union Spartans paid a visit to Midway Monday afternoon to jockey for position in the Four County Conference soccer standings. The Spartans trailed early but came back to post a 4-2 win.
Midway got on the board first when Nestor Antonio found the back of the goal just 9 minutes into the match. That would be all of the scoring in the first half.
Three minutes after intermission Union’s Cesar Ocampo hit pay dirt on an assist from Elias Gonzalez. The score remained tied for less than 5 minutes.
With 32:55 remaining to be played, Raider Alex Boggs scored on a header to give Midway a 2-1 advantage.
That score held for 17 minutes, until Union’s Isaias Campos posted a goal with an assist from Cesar Cardenas to even up the tally.
At the 9:43 mark, the Spartans grabbed the lead on another goal by Campos with an assist by Michael Pineda.
With 5:48 left in the game, Chayanne Lopez scored the final goal. Cardenas again provided the assist.
“I probably haven’t been this proud of a team that I’ve coached at Union,” attested Spartan head coach David Ameen, “just because of the effort that they showed coming back twice. They were coming off a disappointing loss last week. Their spirits were real low. They got motivated and they knew we had to do business at Midway and Midway gave us a fit the entire game.”
Union improves to 6-3-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
“There were a lot of miscommunications on the field tonight,” remarked Midway head coach Allen McLamb. “We had injuries to key players in key spots. I don’t take anything away from Union. They played a good game. They saw some things and took advantage of them.”
The Raiders fall to 4-3 in the conference and 6-4-2 overall.
Midway will travel to East Bladen today (Wednesday), while Union will visit West Bladen.
