Trask had lost 17 consecutive games as they played host to Union Friday evening. They gave Union their best shot, but fell 29-22 and have now lost 18 consecutive games.
Union marched down the field on its first possession, scoring on a Dezmond Faison touchdown run.
Trask then scored on Union’s next possession, as the Spartans fumbled a punt attempt in their own end zone, and the Titans recovered. The game was tied at 7 now.
On Trask’s ensuing kickoff, Dezmond Faison picked up the squibbed kick and darted to the end zone like a bullet from a gun. After a missed PAT, Union lead 13-7.
On the next Trask possession, Dylan Faison scored on a 27 yard run to tie the game again at 13 a piece.
Union stalled on their next possession, and was forced to punt. Trask blocked this punt to start with good field possession. The Titans scored in 2 plays, and after a failed 2-pt conversion, led the Spartans 19-13. They would add a field goal by Matt Sherman to take a 22-13 lead into the halftime break.
The Titans would not score again.
Late in the third quarter, backed up in their own territory, Union’s Ryan Hall found an open Dustin Alphin on a fly route for a 98 yard touchdown pass. This cut the lead to 22-21 after Union’s 2-point conversion was good.
On Union’s next possession, they were forced to punt, but the Titans muffed the punt, leaving Hagan Thonton in position to hop on the loose ball, and give the Spartans new life and great field position. On the next play, Dezmond Faison broke free once again, this time from 58 yards. Shyquan Brunson punched in the 2-point conversion for a 7 point Spartan lead at 29-22 with just 6:30 to play in the game.
The Spartan defense would hold the Titans from scoring, and go on to win by a final of 29-22.
Coach Doug Burley said he was pleased with the way his team fought back in the second half, and with the effort they showed with their backs against the wall.
Leading tacklers for Union were Dustin Alphin with 12, and a sack, George Fernandez with 7 tackles and a sack, and Malcom Mintz had 8 tackles. Hagan Thornton had 6 tackles and a very important fumble recovery for the Spartans.
Rushing, Dezmond Faison led the Spartans with 17 carries for 108 yards, and 198 all purpose yards, including 3 total touchdowns.
Ryan Hall was 2-6 through the air for 100 yards.
Dustin Alphin had 5 carries for 19 yards, and 1 reception for 98 yards and a touchdown.
It was a must-win for Union, and they got the job done. Union improves to 2-4 on the season, and will host a very talented Wallace Rose Hill squad at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
