The Hobbton Middle Lady Wildcats avenged an early season loss to the Union Spartans in volleyball on Tuesday night. After losing 3-0 in the second match of the year, Hobbton evened the season series with a 3-1 victory.
“I’m just glad it’s over,” stated Hobbton coach Chip Pollock. “Union is very well coached and plays very well as a unit, so you can never let down when you play them.”
Hobbton jumped out to an early lead in the first set and looked to be cruising to an easy victory when Union put the pressure on and tied it late.
“Thank God for the serving of Sarah Daughtry in the opening set or we wouldn’t have won the first one,” Pollock noted.
After taking the first set 26-24, Hobbton notched the second set 25-21 behind a strong team effort.
“This was probably our best set of the year,” commented coach Pollock. “Everyone made plays, called the ball, and worked as a unit.”
Union took the hotly contested third set 25-23. “We had no answer for them in the third,” remarked Pollock. “Union set there plays and dominated us far more than the score reflected. Number 8 is probably the best hitter I’ve ever seen on an opposing team.”
Hobbton closed the match 25-17 in the fourth.
“I’m super proud of my girls today. We’ve struggled at times this year with our confidence in closing sets or matches but the girls refused to lose today,” stated Pollock.
The Wildcats were led by Sarah Suggs (18 service points), Sarah Daughtry (31 service points), Delaney Thornton (6 service points, 8 kills), Cameron Hunter and Zaylea King (outstanding overall play).
