Horses move past Spartans for conference win

The Dark Horses brought down 1A rival Union in Spartan Country on Friday, 37-14.

Clinton managed to get on the scoreboard first, halfway into the first quarter with a touchdown. Kris Royal kicked in the extra point to put the score at 7-0.

Clinton’s defense held while the Spartans had the ball, but as soon as the Dark Horses got it back, Silas Herring raced into the end zone and scored a touchdown with only 7 seconds left in the first quarter. With a score of 0-15, CHS entered the second quarter of the game with the lead.

Union answered with a TD and a 2-point conversion at 9:10.

Four minutes after Union’s TD, Clinton raised the bar by scoring another touchdown, making the score 8-23.

The Spartans jumped out first after intermission with a touchdown at 5:10. This moved Union within striking distance at 14-23.

The Dark Horses then scored on a safety to up the score 14-25 at 10:08 in the fourth quarter. Clinton’s Julian Wilkins then got in on the action with a TD at 8:23Scoring from a safety, the Horses gained two points at 10:08 making the score 25-14. Clinton’s Julian Wilkins followed this play with a touchdown at 8:23, raising his teams score to 31.

Two minutes later Dark Horse Silas Herring had the ball in his hands and took it to the end zone yet again. The final score was 14-37.

When asked for his opinion on the game, Clinton’s head coach, Bob Lewis, stated, “We were very sloppy and had too many penalties.”

As for stats, both teams performed well.

For Clinton’s rushing, Silas Herring had 9 carries for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns; Kris Royal had 7 carries for 64 yards and 1 touchdown; Julian Wilkins had 23 carries for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns; Albert Deaver had 4 carries for 20 yards; and Quintin Faison had 2 carries for 6 yards.

In the air, quarterback Jonathan Wright completed 3 out of 8 passes for 49 yards, with 1 interception.

On defense, Jacob Smith had 5 tackles and 1 sack; Kris Royal had 3 tackles; Khari Fryar had 3 tackles; and Lajuan Ashley had 4 tackles.

As for Union, the Dark Horses seemed to shut down Dezmond Faison’s game from the line. He had 12 carries for 28 yards, but 2 kick-off returns for 36 yards and 1 punt return for a 55 yard TD.

Trequan Peterson had 2 carries for 40 yards; and Shyquan Brunson had 7 carries for 21 yards.

On defense, Corey Smith had 9 and a half tackles,; Dustin Alphin had 8 and a half tackles; and Trequan Peterson and George Fernandez had 6 tackles each.

Clinton will play West Bladen at home next Friday. The Spartans will travel to Pender. Game times are at 7:30 p.m.
