The Simple Gifts Fund College Scholarship deadline is less then a month away. For those high school seniors interested in applying, the deadline is Monday, Dec. 2, 2013. This scholarship is an incredible opportunity for Sampson County high school students and worth investigating.

There are currently nine Simple Gifts Fund Scholars. The junior scholars are Connor Day at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., and Kelly Johnson at Emory and Henry College in Emory, Va. Our sophomore scholars are Laura Patlan at Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va., Festus Turlington at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., Harrison Butler at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., and Brooks Barwick in Gambier, Ohio at Kenyon College. Our freshman scholars are in three different states. Madison Bryant is our second scholar to attend Agnes Scott. Ryan Wuester is our fourth scholar in Virginia and our first scholar at Bridgewater College. Casey Yang is our first scholar in New York and is a freshman at NYU in Manhattan. All scholars will be visiting the high schools during the school year. This is a great time for high school students to visit and learn about these colleges and the college experience from local graduate.

Over the summer our scholars met for dinner and enjoyed visiting with the new 2013 scholars. The group had fun discussing roommates, studying abroad, college majors, and other college experiences. Again this year The Sampson Independent will be running articles in the Wednesday paper, and each month one of our scholars will write a feature story about college and college experiences. If you did not see Madison Bryant’s article from last week check it out on the Sampson Independent’s website at

The Simple Gifts Fund added last year graduates from Sampson Community College (SCC) to the pool of those eligible to apply for the Simple Gifts Fund Scholarship. Individuals graduating from SCC with an associate degree and graduate in the top 25 percent are eligible to apply for this exceptional scholarship.
