Being with those you love, one of greatest gifts

Sen. Brent Jackson N.C. Senate

December 12, 2013

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas. Although we should all appreciate our many blessings throughout the year, the holiday season always has a way of bringing into focus the things that are most important. I am sure that many gifts will be given and received in District 10 this year, but I would like to remind everyone that the greatest gift of all is simply the opportunity to be with the ones we love.

I would also like to encourage my readers to take a few minutes to reflect on the reason we all celebrate Christmas in the first place. Many years ago, in a stable in Bethlehem, the Son of God came into our world. As you continue to enjoy your holiday festivities and fellowship, I ask that you keep his teachings in mind and, perhaps most importantly, remember the sacrifice that he made for each and every one of us.

Thank you for all of your support and best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and New Year. The newsletter will not run next week, but will return to the normal, bi-weekly interim schedule after the first of the year.

As always, when you call or email my office, you normally speak with a member of my staff. I want to assure you that I read each and every email that is sent to my legislative account and my staff provides detailed records of phone calls.

DISTRICT HEADLINES:

Warsaw Fire Department Recieves Federal Funds for New Station

The funding, totalling $1.25 million, has been appropriated to the Warsaw Fire Department through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program. Although this is technically a loan, the interest rate is very low. The payments will be easily manageable and well worth the added safety and disaster protection that they will buy for local residents and businesses. The facility is expected to be over 11,000 square feet, with six bays for emergency response equipment and plenty of space for offices, restrooms and a kitchen.

NCDOT Funds Road Improvements in Sampson

Each year, the North Carolina Department of Transportation provides funding to counties to pave unpaved roads and maintain secondary paved roads. The total amount received is partially based on the total unpaved mileage in the county, which amounted to approximately 14 miles and $1.75 million for Sampson County in 2012-2013. Part of that money was used to pave portions of Ballance Road, Jasper Road, Darden Road and Fleet Naylor Road, representing a significant improvement in Sampson County’s rural infrastructure. Also on the priority list is Keith Road, which is scheduled to be partially paved this spring.

Youth Legislative Assembly Application Deadline Fast Approaching

The North Carolina Department of Administration is now accepting applications for the 2014 Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA). The YLA is a program that brings high school students from across the state to Raleigh for a 3-day “mini-session”, which is designed to give them direct experience with the legislative process while equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to become leaders in their communities. This year, I will be providing a scholarship for one high school student from District 10 to attend and participate in the YLA program. The scholarship will cover accomodations at the Raleigh Marriott City Center, meals and a YLA t-shirt. Applicants should plan to be available from March 21st through 23rd and to have their own transportation to and from Raleigh. Those interested should email jacksonbla@ncleg.net or call (919) 733-5705 for more information.
