The Sampson County Board of Commissioners unanimously authorized paying the new elections director $40,656 annually, the exact amount requested by the Board of Elections. Commissioner Jarvis McLamb was absent
During a meeting earlier tonight, commissioners voted 4-0 to uphold the election board’s salary request for Ashley Tew, hired two weeks ago to replace Donna Marshburn who died several months back.
Tew, 28, of Cabin Museum Road, near Turkey, was chosen from among 17 applicants vying for the elections post. Elections board members had narrowed the pool to eight candidates who were each interviewed before the final selection was made on Feb. 4.
“I feel very confident that Mrs. Tew will be able to handle the duties we’ve chosen her to fulfill,” said Ted Lockerman, chairman of Sampson’s Board of Elections, which also included members Danny Jackson and Horace Bass at the time of the vote to hire Tew. Jackson resigned from the board the same day Tew was hired because of his intent to file for the District 1 county commissioner’s seat currently held by McLamb.
Tew began her new duties, under the tutelage of interim elections director Sylvia Thornton, Monday.
