Michael Boykin scored 15 points Saturday to help Clinton take first place in the Four-County Conference standings in their win over Midway. Clinton won the defensive battle, 49-43.
Midway had a 21-20 lead at halftime, and a 28-27 lead after 3 quarters, but the Dark Horses used a big fourth quarter and played great defense to close out their cross-county rivals.
Thaxter Spruill added 11 for Clinton and OJ Jones had 8 points and 8 rebounds.
“It was a great atmosphere and a great game” said Clinton’s head coach Randy Jordan. “It was a defensive struggle, and senior day, which provided us with a lot of emotion and energy. We excelled down the stretch, making 11 of 16 free-throws in the fourth quarter. We were able to get the ball inside late, and that really helped us. I couldn’t be prouder of our guys” finished Jordan. The streak of 5 consecutive wins in just 8 days is incredible for the Dark Horses, who play their last 3 game on the road, at Pender, at Wallace, and at Trask.
Their overall record is now 16-4, and 9-2 in the conference.
Andre Sankey led Midway in scoring with 17 points and Quincy Baggett chipped in 8. Coach Leonard Henry of Midway said that his team just couldn’t get shots to fall when they needed them. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and try to win out. We’re still in the hunt, but we’ll need some help from some other teams now” finished Henry.
Midway travels to West Bladen on Tuesday, and wraps up regular season play at Union Thursday evening.
