Midway Middle’s basketball squads traveled to Union for the regular season finale Monday evening. Midway left with two victories, including the Lady Raiders’ 12th win of the season, meaning they ran the table, going undefeated on the year. It’s the first time the Lady Raiders’ middle school team has accomplished this.
Midway won the girls’ game in convincing fashion, 42-9. Midway pressed the Lady Spartans for the entire first quarter, and built a 28-4 halftime lead before coasting to the win.
Leading Midway were Leah Williams with 9 points and 5 steals, Kacey McLamb with 6 points, Alex Canady with 6 points, Madeline Royal with 8 rebounds, and Alyssa Wrench with 9 rebounds to go along with 5 steals.
Midway head coach Selena Joseph was pleased with the game and their undefeated season. “This is a special group of girls” said Joseph. “I can’t remember this much talent being on the same team at Midway in 15 years, so I’m really excited to see what they can do in the future at a higher level. These girls came to me with a lot of talent, so I can’t say the coaching is the reason we’re undefeated” finished Joseph, although coaching does have a lot to do with it.
Midway’s 12-0 mark is the best in the history of their middle school girls’ basketball.
Midway’s boys were also able to get the win at Union, due to attrition on the Union bench. Union dressed only 6 players, and when their center fouled out, Midway took control of the game, and won 33-22.
Derrick Smith was a bright spot for Union scoring 19 of the 22 points for the Spartans.
Caegan Jackson led Midway in scoring with 9 points, including 7 down the stretch in the 4th quarter. Midway also had a good game from Carson Calcutt, who scored 6 points.
Midway won their last two games of the year after struggling for much of the season. Coach Josh Bullard was proud of his team saying that “it takes 3 wins to make a streak, but I’ll take the 2 here to end the season. I’m glad the boys ended the season on the right note, and we really got better throughout the season”.
Midway finished the season at a 3-9 mark.
