Schools closed again as weather worsens

Sampson County and Clinton City schools officials — and administrators at Sampson Community College — cancelled school again for Thursday as most of Sampson battened down the hatches in preparation for worsening weather conditions throughout the day today and into tomorrow.

The sleet follows a heavy downpour of snow across much of the county earlier today, an event that dumped another inch or two of powder before turning first to sleet and later to freezing rain.

In the southern part of Sampson areas like Ivanhoe, Parkersburg, Harrells and Garland were reportedly hit hard Wednesdy morning with snow followed by ice which was, at last report, now collecting on power lines.

Some lights have flickered in that area, residents said, but no power outages have been reported.

Clinton city crews and Department of Transportation workers were out salting roads and plowing Wednesday afternoon, attempting to clear the hardtop for necessary travel. Most businesses in the area were either preparing to close or had closed, giving their employees time to get home before the worst of the weather hit.

The Sampson Independent, which had early deadlines again Wednesday due to worsening weather conditions, was expecting delays in delivery of the paper Thursday due to the poor road conditions across the county. “We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause readers,” newspaper staff said.
