The North Duplin Rebels spoiled the Hobbton Wildcats’ senior night taking all three games. The Wildcat girls also played their pink game for the year. The North Duplin finally got by the Wildcats 47-42 in overtime. In the night cap, the Rebels did pretty much as they pleased winning 64-41.
The Rebel girls held a 2-point lead, 10-8 after the first frame. The Wildcats turned it up a notch in the second quarter leading 25-22 at the break. After 3, the score was tied at 30 and regulation ended at 38 all. Down the stretch, the game was tied 5 times. For most of the first two minutes of the extra period, the score stayed pretty much even. The Rebels pulled away in the final minute.
Nina Devone led the Wildcat scoring with 20 points. Shay Bell had 10, Melissa Gallegos had 5 and Ashley Alejandro had 3.
Wildcat coach Tom Mewborn said, “We played real, real hard. They were much improved over the last time we played North Duplin. I feel like we have improved tremendously. I am happy with the seniors we have this year. It was a great ball game. Sorry we lost, but it was a great game.”
In the boys’ game, North Duplin held a 16-9 advantage after the first quarter and opened up the lead from there. The had a 10-point advantage, 27-17, at the half. The final was 64-41.
Alphonso Hooper, Hobbton’s coach said, “We had a good practice Saturday where we worked on some things to try and get ready for tonight. My hat’s off to our senior and I wish them well. It came down to turnovers and execution in the second half. In the first half we missed a lot of easy baskets. We have to go back to the drawing board and get ready for out last game at Lakewood Friday night.”
Taja Grey had 10 points for the Wildcats and Marques Surles had 11.
