Union hosted Midway on its senior night Monday evening, which the Raiders spoiled for the Spartans, winning 61-44.
The Spartans came out with lots of emotion as Dezmond Faison and Brandon Lovette found holes in the Raider defense to find their way to the basket. Union led 13-6 after a quarter, but Midway scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to take control of the game. Midway’s Jamarrious Baggett hit a 3 with 10 seconds left in the first half, but Union’s Brandon Lovette nailed one at the buzzer to keep the Raiders’ lead at a reasonable margin. The halftime score was 30-24, Midway.
The Raider full court pressure was too much for Union in the second half. Union lacks depth at the guard position, and Union took advantage of that. The Spartans would only score 3 points in the third quarter while Midway scored 20.
The Raiders were able to coast to the easy win in the fourth.
Quincy Baggett led Midway in scoring with 17 points, and Justin Thompson added 10 for the Raiders. Jordan Thompson had 7.
Union was led by Dezmond Faison with 11 points and Brandon Lovette with 10 points. Cullen Cottle had 8 points.
“We just couldn’t break the press. We played about as good as we can” said Union’s Tim Pope, who’s team really played with a lot of energy in the first half.
Coach Leonard Henry of Midway said that it felt so great to just get a win again. The Raiders had previously lost 3 straight.
“I told the guys that just getting a win could fix this rut that we seem to have been in. We have to forget about it all now though. It’s a brand new season now as we enter the conference tournament.”
Midway will host Wallace in round one of the conference tournament, and Union will travel to Clinton. These games are scheduled for Wednesday night.
Union hosted Midway in their pink-out game Monday evening. Midway scored the first 3o points of the ball game and coasted to an easy 46-22 victory.
Lauren Preddy led Union in scoring with 6 points. Morgan Tew played a big game for Midway with 15 points. Taylor Faircloth added 7 for the Lady Raiders and Amber Poole had 10.
Union will play at either East Bladen or Clinton in Wednesday’s first round of the tournament, depending on who wins the coin flip to decide the number one seed in the conference.
As of Monday night, it is unclear who Midway will play in the first round, but the game will be at home, Wednesday evening.
Midway’s JV boys all played lots of minutes in their 76-62 win over Union. It was Midway’s 21st consecutive win, and their 14th conference win to finish undefeated in conference play.
Paris Smith led Midway with 14 points, Shyheim Small had 13, and Larry Blanks had 11.
“I’m just proud of the guys. I can’t express how good of a group of kids I’ve had this year, and after losing our season opener by a point, we’ve worked hard and got the job done since then” said Midway’s head coach Matthew Creech.
Chris Nash had 14 points to lead Union in scoring.
