Clinton’s baseball team kept their perfect record alive Thursday evening with a 2-1 win over Pender. It was a dominating performance on the mound for Clinton’s ace, Alex Purcell.
Purcell pitched a complete game, allowing an unearned run, 2 hits, walking no batters, and striking out 13. Purcell’s performance was aided on the other side of the ball by Johnathan Wright, as Wright went 2-3 on the evening, driving in a run. Wright was most of the offense for Clinton.
Tracy Thornton, the head coach of Clinton was very pleased with his team’s performance, and his pitcher’s performance following the game. “Alex gave us all that we could ever ask for in a pitcher,” opened Thornton in his post-game interview. “It’s just another great performance for him. We had some mistakes in the 7th, and he responded well. He struck out the last two batters of the game with the tying run at third base. We just can’t ask for anything more than what he is doing for us on the mound right now,” finished Thornton.
It the fifth win in a row to open the season for Clinton, and they are now 3-0 in conference play. They look to move to 6-0 and 4-0 in the conference as they host East Bladen Friday evening.
