On Jan. 1, millions of Americans made resolutions to live healthier lives by exercising and eating better, but somewhere along the way many of those resolutions were tossed out or forgotten. With local farmers’ markets selling fresh produce and warm weather for a variety of outdoor activities, summer is a great time to get back on track working towards those goals. Here are some tips to get you started to revisit your resolutions:
Rethink your drink — Beverages can contribute lots of calories to the overall diet. Changing from calorie-containing beverages to calorie-free beverages may be an easy way to decrease total calories.
Move more — When we consume more calories than we need, we gain weight. Physical activity is important for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight because it uses calories. So, get up and go outside and explore nature or get moving and walk on the track at the Health and Wellness Center from Monday through Friday from 12:00-1:00pm.
Right size your portion — Portion sizes have gotten larger over the years. Controlling your portion size is a key factor in achieving a healthy weight. Remember half of your plate should be half fruits and vegetables, your meat should be the size of the palm of your hand, and don’t forget to add a grain to your plate.
Plan, Shop, and fix — Planning and shopping are key to helping you prepare and eat more meals at home. Choosing to prepare and eat more meals at home is a strategy to help manage weight. Cooking at home gives you the power to control the sodium intake, fats, oils, and carbohydrates that you and your family consume. So, get cooking!
Today is a great day to revisit, review, or to get back on track with your resolutions. You can use these tips to assist you into reaching your goal and remember there’s no time like the present.
