Happy Mother’s Day to all. If you do not have a mother, then find someone that needs some love and care and do something special for her. The nursing home is a good place to start. My mother is 97 years old. I am glad to have her around! She loves company and gifts!

The Volunteer Breakfast was a blast, with over 50 folks attending. Volunteers are priceless. It is a very rewarding job. Thank you! Garland Senior Center Volunteers-age is not a problem. Help in the kitchens, play games, deliver meals, clean up, music, crafts; there is a job for all!

We are still in need of donations, tents, watermelons, and drinks. No matter how great or small, it will be greatly appreciated. All this will be used for the “Older American Month” celebration on Thursday, May 29.. We have so much planned. Fun for all!

Please do not forget about the Alzheimer’s Conference on Thursday, May 22. For more information, please contact Lorie Sutton or Sarah Rich at the Sampson County Department of Aging 910-592-4652. Alzheimer’s support meeting Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 6:00pm in the Sampson County Department of Aging Conference Room. Light refreshments will be served. There will be a special guest speaker, and “tips” on traveling with people who have dementia and Alzheimer’s.

If you need health services, please call us. We could send you in the right direction. We are planning a Tai Chi Class here at the center; we will keep you informed!

Words to live by: Love life, live life. Laugh. Share all this with others. Live so someone will know you have been here and left a mark. “Don’t put off for tomorrow, what you can do today.”

This morning I have heard someone say, “What are you doing in this neck of the woods?” Have you heard any tell of Mary Bennett? ”When you gonna plant them peas?” If you have heard these sayings, you are from Sampson County, and been “Under the Shade Tree”. “Come here gal, whats you been doing?” “When they gonna bury John?” I love these sayings. “Now I want me some good chicken wangs!!” Not wings, but wangs. Enjoy family and friends Under the Shade Tree.
