RALEIGH — Picture a world where all girls got to experience summer camp and the great outdoors while enjoying the beautiful nature all around them. Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines’ mission is to provide every girl within our 41-county foot print with that opportunity.
That’s why every year the council asks community members to help send local Girl Scouts in underserved areas to summer camp. The council’s camp appeal is aiming to provide over 100 camp scholarships or “camperships” to girls to help cover the cost of attending summer camp. Whether community members give $25, $50, $100 or more, their gifts will be an invaluable investment in girls and girl leadership.
“The outdoors has always been a core piece of the Girl Scout experience. When girls get outside it allows them to establish and deepen their bond with nature while taking on new challenges and adventures,” said Keli Diewald, camp program and outdoor education executive, Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines. “By providing girls with opportunities in the outdoors that they otherwise wouldn’t experience, Girl Scout is helping build their confidence and strengthen their leadership skills.”
Studies show that girls today do not spend nearly enough time outdoors. Protective parents, technology, and structured activities leave less time for girls to get outside and enjoy nature. But as a Girl Scout, girls have the opportunity to have their own outdoor adventures and develop a lifelong appreciation for nature and the world beyond walls-whether with her troop, at camp, or with friends and family.
When Girl Scouts get outside, they also discover how to better solve problems and overcome challenges, develop leadership skills, build social bonds, experience greater happiness overall, become team players, and care more about protecting the environment.
Girl Scouts believe that every girl should have the outdoor experience that is why they are calling on the help of the community and friends to help provide camp scholarships for Girl Scouts.
