The Just-A-Mere Garden Club began a new club year with its Sept. 5 meeting, which was held at the home of the hostess, Betsy Williams.

Mixed summer flowers arranged in a crystal vase were displayed in the family room.

President Catherine Gilmore presided at the meeting. She welcomed all, including new member Rachel Edwards. The club collect was repeated by 11 members in attendance to open the meeting.

In the devotion, Elsie Jackson made remarks on “Seasons.” A season may be a time in life, a portion of the year, or a time of growth. Mrs. Jackson closed with prayer.

First Vice President Dixie Honeycutt previewed the new yearbook for the program and highlighted the work planned for the year ahead.

President Gilmore installed Beverly Best as the second vice president.

The historian’s report was shared with the group. It recapped the 2016-17 club work. Rita Wilson and Beverly Best compiled the work and did the reporting.

In other business, the president and others have plans to attend the fall board meeting in Cary. The District 8 meeting will be held on Oct. 12 in Lumberton. The group agreed to continue its sponsorship of a state award.

The reading of the club motto closed the meeting. Then, Martha Turner won the hostess gift drawing and received a fall garden flag.

Afterwards, refreshments were served. Cream cheese pound cake with vanilla ice cream, chicken salad cups, Cheetos, and toasted pecans were enjoyed along with a choice of soft drinks.
