NEWTON GROVE — An investigation is underway following a theft and vandalism incident at the N.C. Alcohol Beverage Control store earlier this week.

According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office and the Newton Grove Police Department, the crime occurred on the morning of Sunday, July 10, when a cement block was thrown through the front door, busting the glass. The estimate of the damage is about $500.

During the recent Newton Grove Board of Commissioners meeting, Police Sgt. Norbert Edwards reported that $280 worth of alcohol was stolen after a burglar entered the store at 203 Raleigh St. with a crate. Edwards indicated that the suspect made a quick getaway after snatching the liquor.

“He’s in there all but 14 seconds,” Edwards said. “He had a black milk crate and goes straight to the Crown Royal, throws them in and runs straight out.”

The department is currently using video surveillance and awaiting more footage before releasing details on a suspect.

“He went by Food Lion before going to the A.B.C. store,” Edwards said about capturing an image of the vehicle, which Edwards described as a charcoal-colored four-door Honda Accord with a 2008 to 2012 body style.

Further details about the incident were not released.
