A Sampson County man convicted of assaulting a child earlier this year has now been arrested on sexual battery and other child abuse and sex offenses following an investigation by Sampson County Sheriff’s authorities.
Maurice Royal, 44, who address was listed as 300 Jean Lane, Clinton, was taken into custody on Monday.
Royal was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child, sexual battery, attempted second degree sex offense and misdemeanor child abuse. He was placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under $80,000 secured bond.
The investigation came about when the father of the male victim reported to authorities the sexual abuse allegations on the suspect, Sheriff’s Lt. Marcus Smith said. The lieutenant offered only that a probe was launched by sheriff’s authorities and probable cause had been established to charge the suspect, leading to the warrants. Limited information is released in sexual assault cases, especially when the victim is a minor.
Royal has a court date of July 29.
According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Royal is still on probation from an assault conviction earlier this year. He was convicted in May 2016 of assault on a child, a misdemeanor offense, stemming from an incident in January. He was given a suspended sentence and one year of probation.
