A fire during the night destroyed a Clinton home and claimed the lives of at least two people, according to reports from emergency personnel, who were on scene investigating the blaze and the charred remains of the property Sunday morning.

Authorities with the Clinton Fire Department, Sampson County Emergency Management and Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, as well as Sampson Medical Examiner Dr. Carl Barr, were among those at the site of the fire, which occurred last night at a property that sits east of Clinton at the intersection of Rackley Road and R.A. Lane, a dirt roadway that runs parallel to the train tracks and busy N.C. 24, which are mere yards away.

Crime scene tape was up around the property Sunday as fire authorities looked over the gutted home. More details were expected later Sunday as the investigation continued. The identities of those killed in the fire have not been released.
