The Sampson Community College Board of Trustees now has a new leader.

During the board’s regular meeting Tuesday afternoon, Erika Starling was elected to serve as the new chairman, while Sandra Carroll was chosen to continue serving in the vice-chair position.

Starling, who has served on the board since August 2016, says she is looking forward to serving the board as chair, and continuing to work towards the vision of the college.

“Sampson Community College is truly an asset to the community,” Starling said. “As a board, it is our challenge to do everything we can to continue to grow the college.”

While serving on the board, Starling says she has seen tremendous growth, including the increased enrollment numbers and the improvements being made to the campus structures.

“Our plan, as a board, is to continue to build on what is already here,” Starling added.

Outgoing president Michael Chestnutt said he truly feels Starling is a good fit who will work hard to better the college for the staff and students.

“I see Erika Starling as a leader,” Chestnutt said. “She is capable of handling anything.”

Chestnutt has served on the board for the last four years, three years as chairman.

“My time as chairman has been very rewarding,” Chestnutt added. “I have had a great time doing this. There are only a handful of people who are ever lucky enough to get the chance to serve as chairman.

Starling graduated from Wesley College in Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She worked in the eye care field with a focus on laser eye surgery support, including Abbot Medical Optics, the world’s leading refractive surgery company, and traveled the United States, providing training and support for physicians’ staff in the operation of the Abbott Medical Optics laser equipment for refractive surgery.

Throughout the next year, while serving as chairman, Starling says she is looking forward to working with the board.

“Working together we can make Sampson Community College an even better place,” she said.
