The cosmetology students at Sampson Community College enjoy learning, but like giving back to the community in the process.

According to Loreta Jones, department chair, students took part in a community service event, “Enriching the Lives of Others,” Monday and pampered participants from UCare and the Sampson-Duplin Group Home.

“This event allowed the students an opportunity to deliver and demonstrate the skills they’ve learned,” Jones said. “The community and public support our college in cosmetology, Monday through Thursday. This opportunity allowed the students to meet set guidelines by the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts, that are requirements for the Licensing Examination and employment.”

In the past, Jones said the students have supported groups at Mary Gran and Southwood Nursing centers, Stedman Pentecostal Church and given manicures to teachers at Roseboro Elementary for Teacher’s Appreciation Day.

The idea to give back this year came from students.

“Our students wanted to give back to the community and public and what better way then by letting them come in and be pampered for a day of free services,” Jones explained. “This will also provide our community with services they normally wouldn’t be able to receive during certain occasions.”

Both UCare and the Sampson-Duplin Group Home responded to the call of services, and Jones says her students were excited about getting to pamper the residents. Monday morning, between 9 a.m. – 1 p.m, students performed at least two services to each client, with approximately 25 people coming out.

During the event, students gave the clients shampoos, haircuts, roller sets, blow dry marcels, facials, manicures and pedicures. All services were free during this time.

“We thank the UCare, Sampson-Duplin Group Home and Sampson Community College for allowing us this opportunity to give back what has so graciously been given to us, that we admire doing and have learned,” Jones said.
