For their generosity and service to the community, two youths are being rewarded on their way to college.

The Kellie’s Krew Scholarship Program awarded scholarships to Olivia Shaffer of Midway High School and Anna Marie Tyndall of Triton High School for volunteerism and scholastic performance. Scholarships are for $1,000 each are given in memory of Kellie Godwin Hinshaw, a 1995 graduate of Midway High. She battled head and neck cancer from 2001 until she passed away in 2014.

A foundation was later formed as a nonprofit to provide financial assistance to help head and neck patients receiving treatment; provide research funding for agencies focusing on research for treatments; and providing community outreach through sponsorship and scholarships. It was later stated in a news release, that the community was supportive of Kellie during her illness.

The purpose of the scholarship program is to provide tuition assistance for students who exemplify outstanding community service and involvement, advocacy and volunteer work.

Tyndall thanked the Kellie’s Krew Scholarship Program for assisting with college. She is attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) to study dentistry. Her volunteer work includes time spent with many services. She is the founder of Project Share, which helps children receive school supplies through donations. Tyndall is also the creator of Project Hope for Seniors, where volunteers visited a nursing home in Harnett County to spend time with residents. Some of the activities were bingo and fingernail painting.

“I think it’s important to give back to the community because there’s no greater feeling than making an impact in someone else’s life,” Tyndall said.

Shaffer is also attending UNCW to study business administration at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She has more than 600 hours of community service, which includes 240 hours of service to the Falcon Youth Camp.

“Service is being a good and faithful servant, and completing a task with a full heart,” Shaffer said.
