A Sampson County man who reportedly shot at a Cumberland sheriff’s deputy Thursday night and then, with another suspect in tow, led officers on a two-county chase, turned himself in to authorities Friday night.

David Scott Bain, 33, of West Clinton Road, Roseboro, is currently being held in the Cumberland County jail. No other details were readily available. Bain was convicted in 2002 of second-degree murder and was released from prison in May 2016, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety online offender database.

He was one of two men involved in a shooting near Stedman Thursday night and the suspect who, after a chase that ended near Hayne Stretch in Sampson, jumped and ran from the scene. Officers had been searching for Bain since the chase.

The incident began around 6:45 p.m. Thursday, when a Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputy says he was outside his home doing yard work. As he worked, a vehicle drove by and someone inside fired shots at the officer. The deputy, whose name is not being released, pursued in a chase that led into Sampson County and eventually included officers on the ground and reportedly in the air.

Bain and another Sampson resident, James Gibbons, reportedly led the officer, and later other authorities, on that chase, which ended in the Hayne Stretch area outside of Autryville with the capture of Gibbons.

According to Lt. Sean Swain with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, after the initial shot was fired, the deputy got into his Sheriff’s Office pickup and began a pursuit that led through Stedman and on Horseshoe Road in Autryville, where the two suspects jumped from their vehicle.

“According to the deputy, he observed the driver of the vehicle point a long-barreled gun out of the window and fire a round in his direction,” Swain stated in a press release issued by the Cumberland department. “The deputy got into his unmarked patrol vehicle and followed the suspect into the parking lot of a gym in Stedman. A vehicle stop was initiated, however, the driver of the vehicle refused to stop.”

The press release indicates that the pursuit headed east on N.C. 24, with the suspect exceeding the speed limit and driving recklessly. The vehicle was later identified as a white 2000 Isuzu Rodeo.

Gibbons, a resident of Sampson County, surrendered to deputies at the scene some time around 9 p.m. The suspect is a convicted felon and was charged with the possession of a firearm by felon, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon.

Gibbons was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center and placed under a $25,000 bond.

The Sheriff’s Office is requesting anyone with information relating to the location of Bain to contact them at 910-323-1500.
