NEWTON GROVE — Supporters of Hobbton High School athletics are preparing for a fun-filled day to celebrate a new year.

Hobbton High School’s Athletic Boosters are hosting the Hobbton District Back To School Bash from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the school, 12201 Hobbton Highway, Newton Grove. A rain date is set for Saturday, Sept. 16.

Admission is free for the public, which is a fundraiser for the organization. Tickets for activities will be available for sale.Proceeds will support needs such as uniforms, field maintenance and equipment for all sports.

Lori Herring, vice president of the booster club, said residents in the Hobbton area and throughout Sampson County are invited to attend. She stressed the importance of supporting athletic needs at all schools, since funding for the district is limited.

“We really appreciate anyone who would come out and support our athletic program as well as other athletic programs in Sampson County,” she said.

Herring said this is the first time the organization has hosted a back-to-school celebration. A similar event, “The Fall Fiesta” was held in 2016.

“We wanted to have it a little bit earlier in the school year this year when the weather was still nice,” she said. “We’re hoping more people will come out.”

Some of the attractions of the fundraisers include inflatables, vendors, laser tag from Battlefield Live, basketball shooting and face painting.

For the inflatables, $15 unlimited jump bracelets will be available for sale. Laser tag is $3 for a 10 minute session.

Five soccer teams are scheduled to participate in an all-day tournament. Herring said more teams are welcomed to join if they wish.

Foods and treats such as pizza, tacos, roasted corn, funnel cakes and shaved ice will be available for sale.

The boosters are also teaming with Backpack Buddies at Hargrove Elementary School and Hobbton Elementary School. Attendees are being asked to bring non-perishable food items to donate at the event. Through the program, children in need receive food over the weekend

“We’re hoping that people would bring the non-perishable food donations to help support the programs,” she said.

Organizers are still accepting teams to participate in the soccer tournaments and applications from vendors. The cost of a vendor space is $25.
