ROSEBORO — A 29-year-old Roseboro man was killed Saturday morning in a barn fire that remains under investigation by authorities with the Sampson County Sheriff’s and Sampson County Fire Marshal’s offices.
Just before 7 a.m. Saturday, the Sampson County E-911 Center received a report of a structure fire at 432 Corbin Road, Roseboro. Fire departments from Herring and Clement responded, along with Sampson EMS personnel, discovering a barn at the address fully engulfed. Once the flames were extinguished, a body was discovered inside that has since been identified as Matthew Lee Sweigart, 29, who reportedly lived at the Corbin Road address, sheriff’s officials said.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office and Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is unknown and investigators are awaiting autopsy results to further shed light on the situation and potentially provide details that could aid in the investigation. Sheriff’s officials noted that the preliminary investigation did not reveal any indicators of foul play.
“Investigators from both agencies are awaiting the final autopsy results and evidence analysis before a final determination is released, which may take several days,” the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement.
