HARRELLS — A pedestrian from Willard was killed Friday night in Sampson County after being struck by a pickup truck.

The incident occurred in the Harrells area when Kenneth McCausley, 60, was trying to cross U.S. Route 421 from Buckhorn Road. Marcus Newton of Rocky Point was traveling north on the highway in a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup before coming into contact with McCausley.

First Sgt. David Kinlaw, of the Sampson County branch of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, reported that the accident occurred around 7:45 p.m. Friday. McCausley was pronounced dead at the scene after troopers arrived. When the accident occurred, Kinlaw said it was very dark in the area.

“There was no alcohol involved and no impairments expected on either the pedestrian or the driver,” Kinlaw said. “There will be no charges filed.”

According to local official, the Friday incident is the 10th fatality on Sampson County’s roadways in 2017. In 2016, 20 deaths were reported.

The last fatality occurred in early October when Andrew Warren, 19, of Clinton, died after his 2003 Ford Explorer ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree in a single-vehicle accident. He was later transported to Wake Med in Raleigh, where he died of blunt force trauma to the head. The Clinton High School graduate was traveling home from Raleigh at the time.
