Registration for Harrells Christian Academy’s 5K Walk/Run for Technology is underway.
The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at River Landing, 116 Paddlewheel Drive, Wallace. Race day registration will be at the Landing Fitness Center from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.
Now in its third year, the annual event will help support the academy’s new website; RenWeb, a new communications systems for students, parents and staff; distance learning for the high school; and other technology initiatives.
Karen Burton, director of advancement, coordinated the first 5K to help raise money for technology needs at the school.
“It was great the first time we did it,” Burton said. “We had a great turnout and we met our goals.”
After the inaugural event, a computer lab was provided for high school students and last year, the middle school received a computer lab as well. The private Christian school does not receive federal funding, therefore fundraisers such as the upcoming one are needed.
Burton said it takes a lot of teamwork for the event, which involves River Landing and student volunteers to monitor stations.
Harrells Christian Academy is also accepting sponsorships for the event. Since the school is a nonprofit, Burton said it’s tax-deductible.
“Our community sponsors have been phenomenal in maintaining the run and helping make sure we have everything we need to meet our goals,” Burton said.
The fee to run or walk in the event is $25 in addition to a $2.50 sign up fee. The registration fee after Tuesday, Oct. 6, is $30. Closer to the event, Burton said registration will be $35. T-shirts will be provided to participants registered by Friday, Oct. 2. Currently, about 50 have signed up, but the amount is expected to increase closer to the event.
On race day, about 130 people come to show support.
“Anyone can sign up and register,” she said. “We would love for them to be a part of the event.”
