Members of the Mintz Christian Academy production of “OZ,” which will be performed May 14 and 15.

The middle/high school drama class at Mintz Christian Academy will present the musical production “OZ” on Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15, in the school gymnasium. Showtime is 7 p.m. both nights.

“OZ” is an adapted version of the traditional “Wizard of Oz.” It maintains all the traditional Oz characters, but with a completely new soundtrack of 10 original songs. The new script was written by Tim Kelly and the new music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur.

MCA’s version of “OZ” will feature a cast of 25 students ranging from sixth through 11th grade. Taking on the leading role of Dorothy is 10th-grader, Samantha Marshburn. “Sam has worked really hard to not only learn her lines, but also to learn several songs, both the lyrics and the choreography” says MCA drama teacher Joe Hedrick. “Her hard work is certainly paying off; she is doing an amazing job.”

Other leading characters include Christopher Matthews as the Scarecrow, Evan Plant as the Tin Man, and Ryan Carter as The Cowardly Lion. Rounding out the cast is Justin Lucas as Oz, Caroline Matthews as Glinda the Good, and Lizzy Lee as the Wicked Witch. Other students will be filling the roles of munchkins, guards, poppies, townspeople, flying monkeys, and a China princess.

“All in all, this is a fantastic cast that is doing a fantastic job. Attendees are definitely going to be entertained,” said Hedrick.

Tickets to the event are on sale now for $5.00. Each ticket includes the show and a dessert that will be served during intermission. All seats are general admission and doors will open at 6 p.m. both nights. To reserve you tickets, call the MCA office at 910-564-6221
