A Clinton man has been arrested on a felony assault offense, as well as others, in connection with an incident in which he reportedly put a relative in the hospital, according to the police chief.

Drew Kevin Clarke, 50, of 416 Sampson St., Clinton, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault on a handicapped person, injury to personal property and second degree trespassing.

According to Clinton Police Chief Jay Tilley, the victim was assaulted at 506 Byron Butler Court by a relative, later deemed to be Clarke. The suspect punched the victim in the mouth. The victim subsequently sought medical attention at Sampson Regional Medical Center.

Clarke was taken into custody by officers a short time later on Tuesday night as he was walked on Sampson Street. He was placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under $27,000 secured bond.

“The motive for the assault is unknown,” Tilley stated.
