A Clinton police official cited for allegedly passing a stopped school bus earlier this month is the subject of an internal affairs investigation, according to a statement from the department Wednesday.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol issued a traffic citation to Lt. Robert Dalton on May 21 for passing a stopped school bus on East College Street in Salemburg. At the time of the incident, Dalton, a sworn officer for the Clinton Police Department, was operating a department-issued vehicle.
The Internal Affairs unit was made aware of the violation on May 15, the same date as the incident, the department statement read. The matter is now the subject of an internal affairs investigation separate from the citation and will be handled administratively.
The department will monitor the citation as it is adjudicated in the court system. Dalton has been employed with the Department since 2005 and is currently assigned as a Lieutenant in the Operations Division, having been part of a string of promotions within the agency earlier this year.
