A northern Sampson County man remains in the Detention Center this morning charged with the murder of his son following an altercation between the two on Butterfly Lane near Dunn Sunday afternoon.

The Independent learned this morning that the shooting had occurred around 4 p.m. May 17, and Sampson authorities just confirmed the murder and the arrest.

According to information obtained this morning, Jerry Calvin Dale II of 41 Butterfly Lane was pronounced dead at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital shortly after 4 p.m. Dale had been transported to the Dunn Emergency Services building following the shooting, called in to Sampson E-911 around 4 Sunday.

His father, Jerry Calvin Dale Sr., was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was jailed without privilege of bond.

Deputies were called to respond to the Butterfly Lane shooting, but were notified while en route that the victim had been taken to the Dunn facility.

Investigators from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation were called in to investigate. Their probe determined that the victim’s father and the victim were engaged in an altercation when a shot was fired.
