Although word is quickly spreading about the net dropping around suspected drug dealers in the city of Clinton and throughout Sampson County, those with warrants against them weren’t able to dodge the inevitable as law enforcement officers descended on their residences again Tuesday night and Wednesday, search warrants in hand.

On the heels of what both Clinton Police Chief Jay Tilley and Sampson Sheriff Jimmy Thornton called a very successful Monday, investigators with the city’s Neighborhood Improvement Team and the county’s Special Investigation Division brought their caravan of officers into multiple neighborhoods, with the end result being more individuals in custody on a plethora of drug charges.

“We are pleased with how this is going so far,” Thornton said Wednesday morning.

The roundups, conducted simultaneously by the Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department, with some assistance from agents with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Cumberland and Fayetteville officers and Homeland Security, are the culmination of months of undercover work involving the purchase of illegal substances from individuals classified as both street level and higher level drug dealers.

Tilley and Thornton said officers had arrest warrants in hand for target suspects in numerous areas of the city and county, all wanted in connection with the earlier undercover buys at those locations.

Among the areas where raids have already occurred were Byrd, Ellen, Phillips and Williams streets in Clinton, as well as Claude’s Drag Road, Old Mintz Highway, Emerald Lane and Diana Lane in the county. A search warrant was also served at Freedom Mobile store in Roseboro, officers noted.
