Sampson and Cumberland law enforcement officers are working tonight to recover a body discovered just a short while ago in South River between Autryville and Stedman.

Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Pope said few details were available at this time. He did note that it had not yet been determined whether this would be a Sampson or Cumberland case.

It is not known whether the body is that of a man or a woman.

“Right now, everyone is out there working to recover the body,” Pope said. “It’s the early stages of a preliminary investigation. We will have more later.”

The body, Pope said, was possibly hung up on something in the river.
