Each year, two Sampson Community College employees are recognized by their peers for excellence in the workplace and the winners are announced at the SCC Foundation’s Campus Drive luncheon.
This year’s EXCEL award winners are Dean of Student Services, Blair Hairr and Division Chair of Business and Occupational Technologies Programs, Jennifer Wiley. Hairr and Wiley were recognized at the luncheon.
“Blair and Jennifer are truly committed to our students and work hard to make education and training available,” said Lisa Turlington, Executive Director of the SCC Foundation. “They are both caring and nurturing at Sampson Community College and in communities that need them most. Blair is a leader in her church and is involved in mission work in and around our state. Jennifer serves locally as well as in communities in Kenya and Mexico. We are lucky to have them at SCC, and I am happy have to have them as friends.”
Turlington said the nominations for the EXCEL award were so strong this year that the committee wanted to recognize two other nominees who are outstanding at work and beyond. Fred Stamey and Sharon Herring were also recognized as finalists as well.
Dr. Paul Hutchins, the college’s president, said he was pleased with participation and the honors.
“Annually our EXCEL awards recognizes two SCC employees for their great work at the College,” he said. “This year’s recipients, Dean, Blair Hairr and Division Chair, Jennifer Wiley work tirelessly to help our students reach their educational goals. I think it was very important to recognize Fred Stamey and Sharon Herring at this event as well. We are fortunate to have both of these gifted and dedicated educators as part of our staff.”
Amelia Surratt, VP of the Foundation and chairman of the EXCEL Committee took time to explain the awards.
“In an effort to recognize outstanding employees, both instructional and non-instructional, the SCC Foundation sponsors a special award of merit for colleagues who go beyond expectations in the workplace and in the community,” she says. “Nominations are received from full-time staff and faculty members from across the campus. To participate in the program as a nominator or a nominee, one must have been employed on a full-time basis for at least three years.”
Each year, winners are added to the EXCEL recognition board in the reception area of the North Building at the college.
The Campus Drive is the fundraiser by the SCC Foundation that focuses on the faculty and staff at the college who decide they too want to donate towards the cause of sending people to college who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it. Sampson Community College is the only community college in the state of North Carolina whose employees all donate 100 percent to support the cause, which demonstrates how important employees feel the college’s mission is.
