The Clinton Garden Club has a rich tradition of making a difference in our community, and we all owe members a debt of gratitude for planting seeds of beauty across our great city.

Now marking their 85th anniversary — and today over 50 strong — the Clinton Garden Club and its members have proven both tenacious in their efforts to improve sites across Clinton and visionary in their approaches to programs and projects, including the beautiful Butterfly Garden at Sampson Community College that not only adds a breath of fresh air to an outdoor space but provides educational opportunities for elementary students year after year.

It’s that desire to beautify and educate, coupled with a welcoming group of women, that has made the Garden Club not only a long-time fixture in Clinton but a delightful piece of our history.

Year after year, those involved in the club have stretched the funds they’ve raised across Clinton, touching in some way nearly every building, a considerable effort, but one tireless accomplished by determined members bent on making our surroundings a breathtaking wonder.

A list of projects includes planting cherry laurels at Clinton High School, maintaining the Welcome to Clinton area at the top of College Street, cleaning up eyesore lots around town, planting rye grass and completing general landscaping at the downtown courthouse, maintaining the gardens at the J.C. Holliday Library, refurbishment of both the prayer garden at Mary Gran Nursing Center and the June Lovell garden at the Domestic Violence Center, not to mention the partnership with SCC’s horticulture department on the Butterfly Garden.

The list could go on and on, including projects that started over 40 years ago and continue today.

It shows the club’s commitment to this community and members’ intent to do their part, and far more, to make Clinton an appealing sight for residents and visitors alike.

But the club’s strength isn’t just in its projects. It’s in the friendships forged and the outreach shown year after year. Proof of those friendships can be found in how members look after one another and desire to be a part of the club even if they can’t actually attend meetings due to health concerns.

That desire to be a part is testament to the strength of the club and the deep conviction of its members, along with the welcoming arms that invite you in and then hold you tight, reminding you of the loyalty of friends and the commitment of a team forged with as much of an inner beauty as an outer one.

We cannot thank the Garden Club enough for the mark it has made on this city and will continue to make year after year. They’ve shown what dedication, vision and a love of community can do with a little determination, some work and a whole lot of love.
