Clinton police are on the lookout for a man believed to be responsible for a sexual assault that occurred earlier this week.
Police Chief Jay Tilley said Thursday he believes the incident is an isolated one. Officers, he said, have a person of interest in the case but no arrest has been made yet.
The suspect is described as a black male, close to 6 foot tall and heavy set, weighing between 260 and 285 pounds, with close cut hair. He was last seen wearing a white or silver t-shirt and dark-colored pants.
Anyone with information about this person, Tilley said, is asked to call the Police Department at 910-592-3105.
The incident occurred Monday after a 25-year-old female met a man inside Walmart at Sampson Crossing and the two struck up a conversation.
“It wasn’t a forceful conversation; it was just a conversation and it continued for an extended period of time,” the police chief noted.
At some point, the man asked the 25-year-old if she would give him a ride home. She agreed and the two left Walmart together. The victim, Tilley said, drove to a location on the north side of Clinton where she was going to drop him off. It was at that point that the sexual assault occurred.
“He sexually assaulted her in the vehicle and then he released her. There was no other physical injury,” Tilley said.
The victim, reports show, called authorities around 1 a.m.
The person of interest, the police chief noted, apparently had been in Walmart for an extended period of time before meeting the victim.
“They met around 8 p.m., Tilley said, “but he was in the store before that time. He approached her and struck up the conversation.”
An investigation into the incident, he stressed, was ongoing.
