NEWTON GROVE — In a few weeks, the local park will be filled with community members watching “Coco” on a large inflatable movie screen while eating popcorn.

The Outdoor Movie Night is scheduled for Friday, May 17, at Weeks Park, 517 Clinton St., Newton Grove. Gates are scheduled to open at 7:30 p.m., with the movie scheduled to start at 8:15 p.m.

Commissioner Gary Mac Herring is looking forward to the event.

“Newton Grove Movie Night is always an exciting time for our town,” Herring said. “This event will be just as fun.”

The Disney-Pixar feature is about a boy and inspiring musician who gets sent to the Land of the Dead, by accident. Soon, he begins searching for his great-great-grandfather, with hopes of returning back to his living family to put and end to their generations-old ban on music.

Admission is free. Concessions such as snow cones, popcorn and drinks are free for everyone under the age 18. Adults may purchase concessions during the showing. With the event being held on the baseball fields, organizers are asking everyone to bring blankets, chairs and bug spray.

“It will be a great night for everyone,” Commissioner Teresa Wilson said.

The event is sponsored by the Town of Newton Grove and local businesses. About 450 people usually come to watch movies in the park. The former Newton Grove Area 100 Committee was also involved in sponsorship before the event returned in 2014, after an hiatus that lasted for a few years.

“If your family has not been to a Newton Grove Movie Night you are missing out on a great event,” Herring said.
