Over the next four months locals living on JB Wilson Road will have to take a detour due to a bridge closure. The bridge is in the area of Midway’s elementary and high schools, and south of the US 421 and US 13 intersection at Spivey’s Corner. The bridge is not slated to reopen until Aug.21, 2014.
The bridge, which is located approximately a mile east of US 421, is in the process of being replaced and currently traffic is being rerouted onto Straw Pond School Road.
“This will be a total bridge replacement,” said J. R. Royal with the Sampson and Duplin County transportation and bridge department, a division of the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Current projections have the bridge being completed in late August; however, that date is subject to change due to weather conditions.
“With weather conditions, anything can be a factor,” noted Royal in a telephone interview on Wednesday. “There are a bunch of variances.”
“We are sorry for the inconvenience,” he added. “But residents are getting a new bridge.”
JB Wilson road stretches down the left side of Midway High if you are facing the front of the school, and the construction signs can be seen as you drive down towards the back of the campus. There is a light at the intersection as well.
For the detour, if you are coming northbound on US 421 take a right onto Straw Pond School Road. Straw Pond School Road will then connect with JB Wilson Road east of the bridge closure. JB Wilson Road is also known as Roanoke Road as it continues east.
Straw Pond Road does continue northbound, turning into Wash McLamb Road, which then intersects with US 13/ Newton Grove Highway.
NCDOT officials also want to remind motorists to pay extra attention when dealing with detours and closures. It is important to make sure to leave with extra time for travel and follow the posted speed limits while proceeding with caution.
