Cocaine trafficking charges were among several offenses leveled against a Duplin man following an I-40 stop over the weekend that included a brief foot chase before the incident ended.

Sequon Wright, 31, of 105 E. Bleeker St., Magnolia, remains jailed in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $150,000 bond, charged with trafficking in cocaine by transport, trafficking in cocaine by possession and possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, all felonies. In addition, Wright faces charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and resist, obstruct and delay.

Sampson Sheriff’s Lt. Marcus Smith said Wright was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over in a routine traffic stop around 8 p.m. Friday night by Criminal Interdiction Team deputies. During the stop, the passenger, Smith said, fled on foot, precipitating a brief foot chase that ended with deputies taking Wright into custody. Discovered on the ground near him at that time, reports show, was a bag containing 32 grams of cocaine.

“This is a perfect example of why traffic enforcement is so important in combating the drug problem in Sampson County and elsewhere,” Sampson Sheriff Jimmy Thornton said in a prepared statement. “If you cut off their transportation opportunity, then you have effectively interrupted their illegal business trade.”
