Teen killed in early morning wreck

An Ivanhoe 19-year-old was killed early Wednesday morning in a collision at McDaniel Crossroads.
Jalen Mathis died at the scene of the accident which First Sgt. Jeff Gordon said occurred at 5:19 a.m. on N.C. 411 near Boykin Bridge Road.
Gordon said Mathis was driving north on NC 411 at a high rate of speed when his 2013 Ford Focus entered a curve and lost control as he was approaching the intersection.
At that intersection was a tractor-trailer preparing to travel east and across the road at the other stop sign was another vehicle sitting stationary.
As Mathis’ out-of-control vehicle approached the intersection, the tractor-trailer, Gordon said, had started to make its eastward move and the Focus struck the back right portion of the trailer, forcing it to slide underneath the vehicle.
The driver, the trooper said, was ejected and died at the scene.
The impact from the accident forced the tractor-trailer to slide into the stationary vehicle at the other stop sign. Neither the tractor-trailer driver or the driver of the other vehicle were injured. The names of those two individuals had not been released at press time.
Mathis was wearing a seat belt, Gordon said, but the impact forced the driver to be ejected.
An investigation into the accident is continuing.
This is the eighth fatal collision on Sampson roadways in 2013. The lives of nine people have been claimed in those wrecks.
