The Clinton sweetFrog store is currently helping beat childhood hunger on national and local levels, both now and in the future. The store is participating in a national campaign called “No Kid Hungry Day” as well as the the local BackPack Buddies program.
Store co-owner Anthony Sessoms said he knew immediately after reading information about the national campaign that it was something in which he wanted his store to be a part.
“From a mission standpoint, we always want to be involved in the community, just like we do with our church nights and promo nights,” Sessoms said, noting that anything that will prevent children from being hungry is among his top priorities.
Along with other participating stores, the local sweetFrog has been accepting monetary donations all week, along with non-perishable food items that will be placed in totes, some of which will be used for the Share Our Strength program, others donated to area food banks. The event will culminate Sunday, Sept. 22, with the Share Our Strength “No Kid Hungry Day.” This store’s volunteer participation will help contribute towards 300,000 meals and also give families instruction on cooking healthy meals.
Share Our Strength began in the basement of a row house on Capitol Hill in 1984, in response to the 1984-85 famine in Ethiopia. Siblings Bill and Debbie Shore started the organization with the belief that everyone has a strength to share in the global fight against hunger and poverty. Today, the organization focuses these strengths on making No Kid Hungry a reality in America. Since 2011, Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign has helped to bring more than 34 million meals to hungry kids throughout the nation.
That is what Sessoms hopes his business can be a part of Sunday, with the help of customers who can continue to donate to the national campaign, and again next week when the local store participate sin efforts to bring in non-perishable food items to help the BackPack Buddies program.
The store, Sessoms said, will be a permanent drop ff for donations of both food and financial assistance for that program.
According to national statistics, one in five children struggle with hunger in the United States, and the sweetFrog campaign is designed to assist with “ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need, every day,” a prepared release stated.
In addition, the local sweetFrog, along with chains across the country, will participate Sunday in the celebration of the opening of the 300th store by hosting a “300 cups” sweepstakes where three lucky patrons nationally will have the chance to each win 100 free 12 ounce cups of their delicious frozen yogurt.
