A 28-year-old Fayetteville man was taken into custody early Wednesday night on a laundry list of drug offenses, most of them misdemeanors, following a traffic stop on N.C. 242 in Roseboro

James Donald Bryant of 821 Oxford St., Fayetteville, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, simple possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, simple possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine and simple possession of a Schedule II controlled substance. In addition, a charge of carrying a concealed weapon was leveled.

According to Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith, Bryant was pulled over by a Criminal Interdiction Team officer for a traffic violation around 6 p.m Wednesday When the officer approached the vehicle, Smith said, he noticed an empty firearms holster on the driver’s hip, alerting him to the possible presence of a weapon.

When questioned about where the firearm was, Smith said the driver told the officer that it was under the front seat.

During a pat-down for weapons, the officer discovered marijuana in Bryant’s pocket. A search of the vehicle turned up the concealed firearm, cocaine, meth, drug paraphernalia and pills, Smith said.

Bryant, he added, did not have a carry/concealed permit.

The Cumberland County man was immediately taken into custody.

Seized at the time of his arrest was the handgun, .70 grams of cocaine, .70 grams of marijuana, .60 grams of meth, 1.4 grams of opium and 1.4 grams of what was listed as “other narcotics.”

Bryant was placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $15,000 bond, but was later released. He is expected to make a first appearance in District Court on Sept. 27.
