Six more felonies have been added to the crimes a Clinton man is being charged with committing, all related to improper sexual relations with a 12-year-old girl.
George Martinus Vandermerwe, 45, of 77 Hurricane Lane, Clinton, was still behind bars Monday when Sampson sheriff’s authorities served the additional warrants — 2 counts of rape of a child; 2 counts sexual offense with a child; and 2 counts taking indecent liberties with a child. Those charges were heaped on top of three others — first degree statutory rape, first degree sex offense with a child and indecent liberties with a child — that were leveled against him on June 15.
According to Sampson Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Pope the additional charges are all related to the same young victim.
Vandermerwe was initially jailed after sheriff’s officials received information through a complainant about alleged sexual actions involving a 12-year-old. An investigation was initiated and Vandermerwe was subsequently arrested.
At that time, Sampson Sheriff’s Cpl. Marcus Smith declined to discuss specifics of the case, only noting that the girl and Vandermerwe were not related, but did know each other.
On Tuesday, Pope, too, declined further comment on the investigation, saying only that the ongoing probe had led to the additional warrants served late Monday afternoon.
Vandermerwe, initially jailed under a $300,000, will now see that bond raised by another $1.5 million.
He is expected to make another appearance in Sampson County District Court Friday, Oct. 11.
