Want to get your kids away from the TV and computer and outdoors for a little fun and food, and a whole lot of fishing? If so, the Clinton-Sampson Ducks Unlimited group is offering just the right adventure, one that has been a local favorite for years.

Organizers are gearing up now for their annual Greenwing Adventure, scheduled for Nov. 10. Children will be able to participate in fishing, fun, food, and a conservation adventure, according to DU’s prepared release. For just $25, youngsters, ages 1 to 17, will receive a rod and reel, bait and tackle, a T-shirt, and a subscription to the Greenwing Puddler magazine, specifically designed for youngsters. The fee also includes a year’s membership with Ducks Unlimited.

Families will learn about conservation, fishing, and have a chance to participate in all kinds of outdoor events like BB gun shooting, bow and arrow shooting, retriever demonstrations and skeet shooting. Food and drinks will be provided for the enjoyment of families by sponsors and will include items like burgers, pizza, ice cream, soft drinks and water, according to Keith Jones, one of the organizers.

“This is a chance for kids to be outdoors and learn about conservation,” said Jones in an interview earlier this week.

The Greenwing Adventure will be held at Laurel Lake Campground and Music Park in Salemburg from 2 to 5 in the afternoon. Local agencies will be in attendance, including the Wildlife Commission, which will provide some training sessions for the children. The Forestry Service will be there with Smokey the Bear. The retriever demonstration will allow children to see the dogs with decoys as well as participate in obedience training. The Salemburg Fire Department will be there for the kids to have a chance to see a fire truck. Face painting and other activities will also be offered.

“This is going to be a good afternoon for kids,” said Jones. “We want to thank our sponsors for helping with this event.” Families will have a chance to enjoy themselves outdoors and spend time learning about nature and conservation, he pointed out.

Last year there were around 175 youngsters among the nearly 400 people in attendance. The Greenwing has been held locally for about 20 years.

The Greenwing Adventure is limited to the first 200 children so entries need to be mailed prior to the Nov. 5 deadline to guarantee T-shirt sizing. Registration after Nov. 5 will go up to $30. Registration forms are available for pickup at a variety of locations including the Sampson Independent, Pizza Inn, Chamber of Commerce, Daughtry’s Bait and Tackle, Tony’s Bait and Tackle, Capstone Bank, James Trading in Roseboro and Matthews Drugs.
