A 38th Sampson County resident has been snared in Operation Candy Crush’s web as the six-months long undercover campaign inches closer to its end.

Cory Dion Bennett, 27, of 606 Winfrey St., Clinton was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with two felony counts of sell and deliver methamphetamine. In addition, an unrelated domestic violence court order violation was also leveled against him at the time of his arrest.

Bennett was placed under a $40,000 secured bond and is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sampson County District Court Friday, Oct. 25.

The Clinton man is the latest in a string of arrests that have been piling up over the last three weeks as Sampson County agents have worked to locate some 40 individuals named in warrants directly related to Candy Crush.

The operation, which began earlier in the year, was precipitated by citizen tips and complaints regarding drug activity in their neighborhoods.

Sheriff Jimmy Thornton has credit those citizens with helping law enforcement in their constant battle with drug problems through the county, problems that the sheriff now says has reached an epidemic state.

Although the Crush operation has seen charges running the gamut, from trafficking in opiates to the sell of everything from crack cocaine and marijuana to methamphetamines, Thornton maintains that the top two drugs he receives complaints about remain meth and prescription drugs.

“There are all sorts of drugs out there, no question, but it’s meth and prescription medication that seem to be the most prevalent. Based on the calls and tips we get, those are the top two.”
