A 61-year-old Clinton man remained jailed Wednesday afternoon on one misdemeanor count of child abuse, a charge leveled against him Monday afternoon.
Willie Oates of 214 Lewis St. was taken into custody around 2:45 p.m. Monday and jailed under a $5,000 secured bond.
According to Clinton Police reports, Oates was taken into custody shortly after officers were called to a Lewis Street residence Monday afternoon in response to what was at first believed to be a home invasion and assault.
When officers arrived a man was standing on the porch and three women, two of them juveniles, were inside.
Through investigation, police learned that Oates reportedly came to the residence, knocked but was not allowed in. At some point, reports show, the man is alleged to have gone to the side of the house and forced his way inside.
No charges were filed against Oates for the reported home invasion or assault allegations; however while police were investigating that incident it came to light that the 61-year-old had been accused of striking a 14-year-old with a switch, causing bruising.
DSS was informed and officers took Oates into custody, charging him with the misdemeanor offense.
He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sampson County District Court on that charge Jan. 21.
