Two months after a robbery at the Newton Grove BP, officers have leveled charges against a 21-year-old.

Police chief Frankie Harrell said Tuesday that Montreal Oates has been charged in the BP robbery that occurred on Oct. 7 around 10:30 a.m.

“We have been working on this BP station robbery with Detective Brad Abate of the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office,” said Harrell, noting that ongoing investigations in both counties eventually linked Oates to the Sampson crime.

“We were able to work with them on some strong-armed robberies they had as well. This suspect was in custody with them for other strong-armed robberies. Cooperation from other agencies has been paramount to the suspect being located in this case.

“While he was in custody we were able to get a confession which they have on video,”continued Harrell.

Right now, the chief said, Oates is being held in Harnett County under a $30,000 bond for the Sampson County charge of strong arm robbery.

He is facing other charges in Harnett County in addition to the charge for the BP station robbery. According to Harrell, on Dec. 3, Oates was charged with common law robbery and conspiracy and has a $130,000 bond for those charges in Lillington.

While a BP robbery suspect is in custody, Harrell said that his office was still working closely with other agencies in the BB&T Bank robbery which happened last month. They are, he stressed, still actively pursuing leads at this time.

If anyone has any further information about that incident, call the Newton Grove Police Department at 910-594-0829.
